I agree innovation is illusive at associations. Most of the time even change is a difficult concept to understand. Associations are risk averse and innovation is all about embracing risk and not being afraid to fail. The most dynamic associations that embrace change and innovation are the ones with dynamic CEOs who are entrepreneurial by nature, such as when Tom Wheeler was CEO of CTIA. However, you are correct; there is an aversion to change and innovation, unless it is in response to members or the economy. And if an association is changing due to the economy, it is usually too little too late. I have worked for and now consult with associations, and there are two things I have observed, the most change (not necessarily innovation) comes when a new CEO heads the association and the management team changes, and number two, there is an alarming level complacency among some association executives, they think if they don't rock the boat they keep their jobs. Innovation is a boat rocker and most CEOs don't view a failed innovation as a learning experience.

Netflix didn't have a plan, responded slowly and is more focused on it's internal cost issues than on what customers care about. Hence they are being roundly punished!

Great insights and tips, Margaret! Thanks.

As a solo-preneur for the past several years, I can really relate to this response as to why more small businesses aren't fully leveraging social media:

<i>"Many businesses stated that they did not have resources or talent to execute successful social media marketing plans."</i>

BUT, I also have to add that social media has granted me graceful access to clients and opportunities I doubt I'd have reached without it. I think it's definitely worth the time it takes to create and nurture online relationships that very often convert into business success.

Thanks for the mention Kara and thanks for the good article.

I agree that these mistakes aren't limited to small business sites. You see them on sites all across the board. On the bright side more and more designers are becoming aware of and learning basic design principles so hopefully we'll see better designed sites in the days ahead.

Making sense.
Apple is a marketing company first, then a tech company. The sooner others understand that, the better!
