Owner Speak: The Small Business Monster

While small business owners live the dream of owning their own business and being their own boss, they are ultimately the only ones responsible for the success of their business—a sometimes-monstrous burden to carry.

Jim Meyers, founder and president of Imagination Publishing, discusses his own monster and its worth in his regular blog at The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), Owner Speak.

This excerpt from Jim’s blog post describes his sometimes, sleepless nights:

“I met the monster about two months after I started my business. During the first couple of months, everything is new and exciting but once that begins to wear off, that’s when the monster comes. Back then, in the early years, the monster showed up nearly every night. Usually around three in the morning, I’d wake up, alone with my fears, and find the monster staring down at me. For small business owners, there are many reasons why the monster visits. In those days, it was usually about making payroll, or sacrificing my family’s security or wondering if I had made the right decision to start a business…”
